Lawyer from Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario University. He has devoted his career mainly within the sphere of politics. He was Private Secretary to the Agriculture Ministry and Council of Bogotá in two consecutive periods, and in both President of the corporation.
In 1994, he was first elected Senator for the Colombian Liberal Party (Partido Liberal Colombiano), and then in 2002 he was again elected for the Movement “Colombia Siempre”. In this occasion as head of the list he won two seats in the senate, and his party achieved the third highest voting in the country. In 2006 the movement that endorsed his candidacy four years ago merged with “Cambio Radical”, a new party which he runs to the senate for the fourth time.
In those elections, Cambio Radical Party not only established itself as a political alternative achieving 15 senators and 22 representatives to the House of Representatives, but as senator, Germán Vargas Lleras managed the greatest voting.
As leader of Cambio Radical Party, he ran for the Presidency of the Republic in the 2010 elections.
Cambio Radical Party was one of the political Organizations that formed the government coalition part in the Alvaro Uribe Vélez government.
